Today is the feast day of St. Maria Josepha Rossello, Third Order Franciscan and foundress of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy (an order dedicated to the education and care of young girls). Like St. Teresa of Avila, St. Maria Josepha believed that she could accomplish anything with two cents and prayers to St. Joseph. Here is one of my favorite stories:
One day, the motherhouse was running dangerously low on funds. St. Maria Josepha asked all of the sisters and children to gather in the chapel to pray. They prayed for some hours and St. Maria Josepha asked a sister to check the cash box. The sister returned with two small coins and a button.
“Either we’re not praying hard enough or we are not praying correctly,” St. Maria Josepha retorted. “We need to pray harder.”
So the sisters and the students prayed even harder than theyhad before. This time, Our Lord had provided the sisters and their students with the money to cover their expenses.
Our Lady of the Angels, pray for us!
St. Maria Josepha Rossello, pray for us!
