On July 4/17, the Russian Orthodox Church solemnly commemorates the martyrdom of Tsar Nicholas II and his family in Yekaterinburg. As is well known, Tsar Nicholas murdered by the Communists after spending many months under house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo, Tobolsk and Yekaterinburg.
The following letter written on the Tsar’s behalf by his daughter, Grand Duchess Olga, speaks to his family’s profound religious leanings. It is only a short fragment, but filled with much meaning:
“Father asks us to remember that the evil which is now in the world will become yet more powerful, and that it is not evil which conquers evil, but only love…”
Our Lady of Vladimir, pray for us!
Tsar-Martyr Nicholas, pray for us!
