St. Bernadette Soubirous

St. Bernadette Soubirous

Born in 1844 to family of an impoverished miller in Lourdes, Bernadette suffered from ill health throughout her youth. Between February and July 1858, Bernadette was visited serveral times by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the grotto of Massabielle near the river Gave. It was there that Bernadette received the famous message of Lourdes in which the Blessed Virgin confirmed her title of the Immaculate Conception, which had been proclaimed only four years before by Pope Pius IX.  In later life, Bernadette became a Sister of Christian Instruction and Charity at Nevers. She spent the last years of her short life in prayer and tremendous sufferings. Bernadette died in 1879 and was canonized by Pope Pius XI.
