Good Jesuit, Bad Jesuit has seen fit to publish the name of many Jesuit priests and brothers, who have been implicated in law suits against the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus. The list was nothing short of sickening to me because it brought home how many of these men are involved in the scandal.
Of course, none of this should surprise those of us that have lived through sex scandal that erupted in 2002 and bankrupted several different dioceses. One of them being the one in which I currently reside. Yet it is still shocking to hear that men who dedicated themselves to serve God for their entire lives would commit such dastardly offenses against innocent people. After all, what did they do to merit the unwanted attention?
What makes the list even more surprising to me is that one of the Jesuits included by the author on the blog is a photographer and a mainstay of the art department at Gonzaga University. His name is Fr. Brad Reynolds and he is also the author of several mystery novels. I have not met this particular Jesuit, but I have heard good things about him from friends. Oh well, I guess the scandal does hit close to home for some of us.
I would also like to point out here that I have privileged to know Jesuits, who have been faithful to their vocations in the Church. I already mentioned Fr. Paul Luger, who is currently celebrating his 80th jubilee, in an article elsewhere. But there have also been others such as Br. Adam Weisgerber, Br. Willie Yam, and Fr. Jack Harrington. All of these men were filled with the missionary spirit of St. Francis Xavier and the zeal of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
We should pray for more Jesuit vocation and for an end to this current bankruptcy proceeding.
Our Lady of the Angels, pray for us!
St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us!
