Like Father Damien de Veuster with whom she will be canonized, Blessed Jeanne Jugan also led a life that was dedicated to the service of the poor and sick. For most of her life, Blessed Jeanne had worked various menial jobs as well as being a nurse. When she opened her heart to a paralyzed woman, she and her companions gradually began to form a small community. Although she was later to be deprived of her position as superior, she continued to work among the Little Sisters of the Poor as one of them. It is a testimony to her faith and fortitude that she did not fight against this last seeming injustice. She continued doing what she had been called to do: caring for those that could not care for themselves.
