In the midst of all the brouhaha surrounding L’Affaire Williamson, L’Affaire Wagner, and the visit of Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the Vatican, there is also some very good news to report. The Australian reports that Pope Benedict XVI will canonize ten new saints on October 11th.
Among these will Fr. Damien de Veuster and Jeanne Jugan. Father Damien is the renowned priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts (Picpus Fathers), who sacrificed himself for his flock of lepers on the island of Molokai. Blessed Jeanne Jugan is the foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor, a congregation of religious whose charism is to live and work among the poorest of the poor.
Due to my great devotion to Father Damien, I will post a more ruminative post at some point later in the day or week.
Our Lady of the Angels, pray for us!
Blessed Damien de Veuster, pray for us!
Blessed Jeanne Jugan, pray for us!
