Pope Benedict prays at Pius XII's tomb

The photograph above shows our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, praying before the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli).

Pope Pius XII reigned from 1939 to 1958 and presided over many important events including the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (1942),  the dogmatic definition of Our Lady’s Assumption (1950), and the famed encyclical on the liturgy “Mediator Dei.”

Pope Pius XII’s tomb is located in the Vatican grottoes underneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may eternal light shine upon him.

Our Lady of the Angels, pray for the Pope!
