Mission San Juan Bautista

A reader of this blog recently notified me that there is a Gregorian (Tridentine) Latin Mass is currently being served at Mission San Juan Bautista in San Juan Bautista, California (about an hour away from Monterey).

The largest of the missions founded by the Franciscan friars in California. It was built 1797 by Fr. Fermin Lasuen to evangelize the local Mutsun and Yokut people. The mission suffered extensive damage during the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and has since been restored several times. It is currently under the administration of the Diocese of Monterey.

Interestingly enough, Mission San Juan Bautista was used as a set for Alfred Hitchkock’s film “Vertigo.”
