Blessed Louisa Albertoni was a widow and the mother of three young children. As a Franciscan tertiary, she took care of the poor and ruined her health in the process. It is said that Louisa wept so much during her contemplation of Our Lord’s Passion and Death that she nearly lost her eyesight.
She was renowned as a miracle worker among the local people and is also known to have levitated during her ecstasies. Blessed Louisa died on January 31, 1533 and was beatified in 1671 by Pope Clement X.
A famous sculpture by Gianlorenzo Bernini is to be found in the Church of San Francesca a Ripa in Rome.
