In writing about Archbishop Thuc and the rest of the traditional movement, conversations inevitably arise about Bishop Clarence Kelly and the Society of St. Pius V. As some readers of this site will know, Clarence Kelly was one of nine priests who left the SSPX over the issue of resisting yet recognizing the Pope. That group also included Bishop Donald Sanborn, Bishop Daniel Dolan, and Fr. Anthony Cekada.
The main reason why I would like to talk about the SSPV is because they do question the validity of consecrations performed by Archbishop Thuc. In fact, the SSPV will refuse Holy Communion to anyone who attends Masses at mass centers of Independent priests, the CMRI, or any other priest who can trace his lineage back to Archbishop Thuc.
The SSPV are extremely conservative and even more so than the SSPX, the CMRI, and any number of other traditionalist organizations. Like the other groups, they do have their own congregation of nuns (Daughters of Mary, Mother of Our Savior) and they also run various schools.
Their Mass centers can be found throughout the United States and Canada. There are several parishes and missions a few hours drive from where I live in Montana. Most the group’s activities are centered in and around the New York State area. The main church (St. Pius V Church) is located in Oyster Bay. They also run their own radio station.
