There is a famous story about an early disciple of St. Francis that illustrates the Franciscan devotion to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Brother Bernard of Quintavalle was one of Francis’s earliet disciples. One day during the course of Mass, Brothe Bernard fell into such a spiritual ecstacy that he forgot to pull the cowl over his head during the Consecration (a Franciscan custom at the time). He remained kneeling in the chapel of the friary until the next day when he finally came out of his ecstatic state.
It was then that the friars gathered around him and asked Brother Bernard what he had seen. He told them that he had been taken up to the heavens and many things had been revealed to him.
It seems to me that when we are given gifts and graces from God, we should not waste them or throw them away. Even if we are at Mass and God gives us light into our human condition, we should be open to listen. Perhaps, we may not experience the same spiritual ecstacy of Brother Bernard, but some of us do experience it every time we receive Jesus into our souls.
