According to the Novus Ordo Calendar, today is the feast of St. Benedict. Yet few people realize that the Benedictine Order celebrates two feasts in honor of the father of Western Monasticism. One of these feasts occurs on March 21 (The Patronage of St. Benedict), while the second one occurs in July. The first is associated with his heavenly birthday, while the second is associated with the transfer of his relics from Monte Cassino to France. Therefore, the Benedictine family celebrates two feasts.
It is also interesting that the feast occurring today was once accorded its own octave by the Vatican, which was celebrated for the following eight days in Benedictine monasteries. Therefore, certain feasts such as those of St. Alexis (July 17th) are not to be found in Benedictine breviaries. The only feast on which the octave is commemorated rather than celebrated is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16th.
On this St. Benedict’s day, let us give thanks to God for the many graces that he has deigned to bestow through him as well as for the many different Orders of the Church that grew from St. Benedict’s foundation.
